Messi, Iniesta, Xavi star in our Barcelona Greatest XI — Who else made the final cut?

Barcelona supporters have been blessed with hundreds of quality players in their club’s history. As a result, the task of narrowing so many stars into an ideal, all-time starting lineup was certainly not as easy as it initially seemed.

In Episode 43 of The Barcelona Podcast, Francesc and Dan went head to head and, after digging up the history books and analysing hundreds of numbers, percentages and other geeky stats, came up with their own answer to the ever-lasting question: Who are the absolute best footballers to ever play for Barcelona in their respective positions?

The pair agreed to adhere to Johan Cruyff’s classic 3-4-3 formation — as it couldn’t be any different, given the remarkable glory the system brought to the Catalan giants.

After much deliberation, Francesc opted to only include players he watched consistently during his lifetime. Here is his starting eleven:

Valdes
Alves – Puyol – Sergi
Busquets
Xavi – Iniesta
Ronaldinho
Messi – Eto’o – Stoichkov

In contrast, Dan decided to go for what he referred to ‘oldies but goodies’ and chose the following eleven:

Ramallets
Puyol – Koeman – Segarra
Messi – Xavi – Iniesta – Cruyff
Paulino Alcantara – Cesar – Kubala

You can hear Dan singing the praises of all his players here (21:40):
