How does the Catalan referendum affect Gerard Pique?

For a player in decent form, Gerard Pique is being challenged in ways that he has never been challenged in his career before. Pique has long been accustomed to jeering and insults from fans of the Spanish national team, and after voting in the Catalan referendum, the defender was met with banners and jeers at an open training session with La Furia Roja.

Pique has been praised for his composure by Spain manager Julen Lopetegui, but this may be just the beginning of the end of his time with the Spanish national team. The Barcelona defender has made it clear that he will retire from international duty after the 2018 World Cup, but he also admitted that if Lopetegui or the Spanish FA wanted him gone earlier that he bid an earlier farewell.
