Last week Lionel Messi denied any rumors linking him to Inter Milan, putting some Culés at ease. Yet, with everything currently going on around the club and the events of the recent months, as discussed on the latest edition of the podcast, there is still a lingering fear that the Barcelona legend could chase a new challenge and leave Barcelona behind.
The thinking has always been that the Argentine will end his club career at either FC Barcelona or Newell’s Old Boys, the club where he got his start. It was at Newell’s that Barcelona were first alerted to the player, a diminutive 12-year-old at the time. Josep Maria Minguella pushed for the player to join La Masia, and with the help of Carles Rexach, Joan Lacueva, and a napkin, got Messi on board after a long and difficult negotiation.
All these years later, Culés are reminded that business and the exodus of legends is often as complicated as when they first arrive. Messi is still at the peak of his powers, exemplified by how he’s recently opened as the favorite to win his seventh Ballon d’Or later this year, and he is still a few seasons away from the career twilight that Xavi and Andrés Iniesta played out at the Camp Nou.
