It may feel like there is an asterisk on the championship, but Barcelona Femení were named the 2019-2020 champions of the Primera Divisiòn. There is still much to play for in other competitions, but the Femení being named the champions of Spain felt a bit inevitable and certainly not worth rushing back to something that seemed decided. Promotion and relegation will still need to be figured out, but Barcelona were leading rivals Atlético Madrid 59 points to 50.
The trophy is an important one for Barcelona, since although the team made the Champions League Final last season, they hadn’t conquered the Primera Divisiòn since 2015. This is their fifth such trophy in the competition.
Similar to La Liga, Espanyol is languishing at the bottom of the Primera Divisiòn and is facing relegation alongside Valencia. Sporting de Huevla is currently in the relegation play-off, one point behind Madrid CFF. CD Tacòn, the team affiliated with Real Madrid, sits in tenth.
Barcelona properly reinforced last summer, bringing Jenni Hermoso back from Atlético Madrid and bringing the league trophy with her. The Spanish striker was first in goals with 23, followed by teammate Asisat Oshoala with 20. Rounding out the top three was Ainize Barea from Deportivo de La Coruña with 14 goals. Alexia Putellas was tied for seventh with ten.
Barcelona scored 86 goals in 21 matches and conceded just six. They suffered just two draws and were undefeated in the league. The +80 goal differential was obviously top in the league, with Atlético Madrid second with a +26 goal differential.
It’s still uncertain how, when, or if the Champions League will be decided for the 2019-2020 season. The team had already captured the Spanish Super Cup with a dominating 10-1 performance over Real Sociedad, and a run at European glory would be unprecedented success for a group that is continuing a meteoric rise in the women’s game.
