Barcelona’s hopes of lifting the Europa League trophy this season came to a disappointing end after they were knocked out of the competition by Manchester United. The Spanish giants, who had high expectations under their new coach Xavi, were hoping to make a deep run in the tournament but fell short against the English club.
After the game, Xavi expressed his disappointment and admitted that Barcelona had not measured up in their European outings this season. “Matches in Europe are decided by small details and we have not controlled them. That’s why we’re out,” Xavi accepted in his post-match interview.
Despite Barcelona’s exit, Xavi tried to take a positive outlook by pointing out that the team had improved compared to last season. “It’s a shame because the team has shown its face and deserved more. They are physically very strong. We could have dominated the game more,” Xavi reflected, before attempting to look forward.
Xavi’s choices in Europe are being scrutinized, including on the last edition of the podcast:
Barcelona now need to focus on their remaining games in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Xavi stressing the importance of these competitions for the club. “The only positive thing is that on Sunday we already have a game and we have to focus on Almeria and on Thursday in the semifinal of the cup. There are two titles left and we want to win them because they are very important for the club,” he concluded.
While Xavi’s first season in charge of Barcelona has had its ups and downs, there are still reasons for optimism for the Catalan club. With Xavi’s leadership and the talented squad at their disposal, Barcelona will be looking to bounce back stronger in the future and once again compete at the highest level in Europe.
