Despite the controversy surrounding his future, Pedro and the club’s board agreed to extend his Barcelona contract until the summer of 2019 just five weeks ago in a move that surprised many in the Catalan capital. Why would a player who is consistently benched at the peak of his career agree to stay a further four seasons behind the shadows of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez and even newcomer Arda Turan?
According to Mundo Deportivo, the club’s board agreed to reduce his buyout clause from €150 million to just €30 million as part of last month’s deal, in what can only be interpreted as a move by both parties to make an eventual departure much more likely, a mutually beneficial deal for player and club.
